Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts
Opened in 1991, the $10.5 million Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts is a multi-use facility designed and equipped to accommodate a broad spectrum of the performing arts, including theatre, music theatre, opera and operetta, choral and band music, dance, and performance art. Home to the theatre department and performance home to the music department, the Center contains two theatres, a large reception area, a scene shop, prop shop, graphics lab, rehearsal room, costume shop, two dressing rooms, and sound and light booths. Approximately 120 performances involving over 400 artists are presented each year at the Lenfest Center, including professional performances presented by Washington and Lee's Concert Guild and Lenfest Series. The Lenfest Center is also used by community organizations including Fine Arts in Rockbridge and the Rockbridge Concert and Theatre Series.
The Theatre Department offers courses in all areas of dramatic art as well as a major. Several productions a year by the university theatre not only utilize talent from the entire University, but also provide important laboratory experience for theatre students. University Theatre activities are open to all students who may wish to participate in any capacity. Also located within Lenfest is Wilson Hall, which houses the Music and Art departments, a concert hall, and art gallery.
